AD ASTRA (2019)

While the cinematic components assembling the film were all beautifully executed in the creation of this deep space save the universe adventure film, it falls short in creating a storyline that makes you want to connect with it.

Brad Pitt’s character, while well acted, is hopelessly distant from the audience as emotionless and disconnected from humanity – just like his father’s character (portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones) – begging the question why humanity would entrust the mission to a similarly minded individual in the first place.

The aspects of the movie that pushed me forward into it (instead of making me turn away from it / turn it off) were the beautifully done special effects sequences that pull off the environment of space – the weightlessness and lunar/mars landing sequences are excellently well done but, I would recommend that if this filmmaking team were to venture into another space film that they spend just as much time building up the world the story originates from and connecting the audience to the peril it faces that it does in selling it’s extraterrestrial elements.
